Configure and Administer vSphere 6.x Networking

Virtual networking is quite important for a virtualized environment—due to the isolation pillar of the system virtualization, the VMs can communicate with each other (and with the rest of the world) only through the network.

VMware vSphere virtual networking has several important concepts, but they are well explained in this document: https://www.vmware.com/content/dam/digitalmarketing/vmware/en/pdf/techpaper/virtual_networking_concepts.pdf.

Starting from version 4.0, there are two different types of virtual switches:

  • Standard virtual switches (vSS): Available in all ESXi editions, including the free edition
  • Distributed virtual switches (vDS or also DVS): Available only with Enterprise Plus edition or bounded with VMware vSAN or NSX licenses
Practicing what you learn during the chapter is a key point to enforce your skills and prepare for the exam. A useful VMware HoL for this purpose is the HOL-1810-01-SDC—Virtualization 101: Introduction to vSphere.

The reader will learn about the following in this chapter:

  • Managing vSphere standard switches
  • Managing vSphere Distributed Switches
  • Understanding VMkernel interfaces
  • VMkernel interfaces
  • NIOC capabilities
