Effective feedback

People view feedback as a means to strengthen confidence and to improve themselves. The spirit of giving negative feedback is not about finding fault or fixing blame, but to give pointers and perspectives on how the receivers of the feedback can improve themselves.

The person giving feedback is honest, yet courteous and respectful and the tone of the feedback is about how the receiver of the feedback could have/can do better.

The goal is to point out specific areas of improvement and, if possible, suggest actions that can help the person to make that improvement. Equally important is that the receiver of the feedback is willing to listen with an open mind and not become defensive when they hear something negative about themselves. People seek to get feedback from each other on a regular basis, both after a specific event and/or at regular periodic intervals. Similar to transparency, trust is the primary enabler for open and effective feedback.
